Perplexity just shipped an orchestration layer across 19 frontier models. It runs overnight, delivers finished work, $200/month. Genuinely impressive.

But their reasoning engine is Anthropic's. Their research layer is Google's. Their speed model is xAI's. The same week they launched, Anthropic shipped Claude Cowork with enterprise connectors that do the same job... using one model they own.

Then OpenAI acquired Astral (the team behind Ruff and uv), tools with hundreds of millions of downloads per month. "We'll continue supporting open source," they promised. The Hacker News thread hit 1,300 points. Top comment: "How viable is it that these stacks remain open?"

Meanwhile, Apple added AI coding to Xcode and froze App Store updates for Replit and Vibecode. Replit dropped from 1st to 3rd in developer tools in two months. Apple's message: you can exist in our store, just don't compete with our tools.

Three different layers of the stack. Same pattern.

The model maker absorbs the orchestrator. The platform owner absorbs the toolchain. The gatekeeper freezes the competitor.

If your AI strategy depends on a layer you don't control, you're not building a business. You're building a feature that someone else will ship natively.

Are you building, or renting?
